From childhood, I had many questions about how and why things work. As time passed, I gained sufficient information to acknowledge that this world is mapped out by engineers. Most of my questions found answers since I started to study engineering. I have always admired engineers and the things they create. I dreamed of being a creator as well. One of my main goals is to impact the world’s well-being. The American University of Armenia has gotten me one step closer to my dream. As I have already spent two academic years at AUA, I can confidently say that I made the right decision.
Becoming an engineer is a huge responsibility for me, firstly as an Armenian, as my country and my nation need highly qualified engineers. There are many fields where I would like to contribute; however, doing research and being more observant of our environment makes me realize the importance of solving Armenia’s environmental problems.
Armenia is a small country, and our environment, lacking in natural resources, encourages us to change our lifestyle and be more environmentally friendly. All natural resources in the world are scarce and finite; therefore, the concept of sustainability is developing day by day along with the development of technology. The increasing number of companies that deal with solar energy in Armenia proves that this concept is growing in Armenia as well.
The problems I encountered while researching and observing our environment are overexploitation of natural resources, environmental pollution, and poor management of our water resources.
My contribution to my country started from this field. This year, my teammate and I did a project which allows us to harness energy from footsteps. We are both passionate about sustainability, and we are planning to develop this project to make it usable in Armenia. This project required skills and knowledge from maths, mechanics, and electronics. With every new knowledge and skill that we are getting from AUA, our project develops.
I believe that to make sustainability a lifestyle, people need to do research and study its concept profoundly. I consider my responsibility to tell people about sustainability’s importance and encourage them to come up with creative and wise solutions on how to use our resources. For that reason, I attend seminars, explore the world of sustainability and think of new ideas to give solutions to environmental problems with the help of advanced technologies. The intelligent usage of Armenia’s natural resources will benefit the country’s economy and ecology considerably.
While sustainability and health are interconnected, I want to invest my education in Armenia’s health industry as well. Cleaning our environment will benefit people’s health undoubtedly, nevertheless, there is one immediate problem in Armenia’s health industry that needs solution.
Armenia is facing post-war consequences, and many young individuals were hurt and became disabled; hence, they need advanced technologies to be cured. For that reason, new initiatives are being created, and I plan to share my knowledge and experience with them. One particular example could be initiatives dealing with prostheses for those who lost their limbs during the war. As I am currently studying and practicing 3D design, my help would be in that sphere until I gain sufficient experience in other engineering responsibilities as well.
To sum up, seeing individuals from my generation or younger being enthusiastic about creating something useful and making our country a better place motivates me to contribute to engineering education. Engineering is a very broad subject, and all of its fields are significant for a country’s growth. My long-term goal is to contribute to the development of engineering fields in our educational system and develop these fields in the labor market. For instance, civil engineering, environmental engineering, biomedical engineering, and many more.
Seeing Armenia prospering is the best outcome we can get from our hard work and effort, and Huys Foundation helps me move forward with confident steps towards my goals.
I am aware that Huys Foundation is granting the Huys Scholarship to me with the anticipation of my good faith pursuit and implementation of the projects and undertakings described in this letter, to which I hereby commit.
